Living in Maryland there can be a lot of influence from the Pennsylvania Dutch country and this Dutch Apple Roll Recipe is representative of that influence.
Recipe Ingredients:
6 apples
2 cups of all purpose flour
1 twaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
2/4 cup crisco shortening
1/2 cup milk
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup butter
Begin preparing the apples by peeling, coring and chopping them up, then set aside. In a medium bowl sift together the flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in the shortening and add milk, when you get a dough like consistency roll out on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut 1/4 cup butter into pats and smear randomly on dough. Sprinkle dough with chopped apples and then sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over the apples. Now roll the dough up like a jelly roll and cut into slices 1 inch thick. Arrange roll slices on a baking pan.
Now dissolve 2 cups of sugar in 2 cups of water and boil in a medium saucepan. Add 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 cup of butter. Boil until slightly thickened. Pour sauce over apple roll slices and bake in oven at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream.
